The Hell of the North

Today (April 4, 2009) was my first race of the year. The race is called the Hell of North and takes place on a 5 mile circuit that includes 1.75 miles of dirt road per lap. It is Salt Lake's version of Paris-Roubaix, also called the Queen of the Classics, or The Hell of the North. Paris-Roubaix races over the historic cobblestone roads of Northern France. Today, there was light snow. The paved roads were wet and the dirt road muddy. I started off poorly as I had trouble getting into my pedal. This put me at the back of the pack right off the line. This wasn't a big deal as I was confident I could work my way back through the peloton. I was wrong. As we came out of the first corner I was suffering immensely to maintain the pace. I finally worked my way back into the group and tried to settle in to the draft. The accordion effect of the peloton was horrendous as the back. I had to keep accelerating, braking, accelerating, braking, etc. As we came around the 2nd corner on the course gaps opened at the back of the group again. The riders at the front drilled it out of the corner, and I was already on my limit trying to catch back up. I just did not have any power and was really struggling to accelerate. I eventually caught on to the back of the group again. Then the front accelerated again, a gap opened, and I couldn't close it. Demoralized by getting dropped half way into the first lap I settled in for a solo ride. Adding injury (but not literally) to insult a screw came loose on my bike computer and it was now dangling by a wire. I hadn't even started the dirt road yet. Part way through the 2nd lap things just did not feel right with my bike. I looked back at my rear tire and I was nearly riding on the rim. I had a slow leak and this explained a lot as to why I was riding so poorly. Of course by this time the wheel car had long since gone past me to stay with the lead group. So, I stood on the side of the road, in the blowing snow, for what seemed like forever. Finally, the lead pack lapped me and I flagged down the wheel car to get my spare wheel. With a fresh wheel, that had air in it, I set out again. The difference of having a high pressure tire was night and day. I felt like I had power again. It's too bad I was over a lap behind by this point. If things were not bad enough, on the 4th lap the shifter for my rear derailleur stopped working. So, I got to finish the race in one gear. Awesome! Needless to say it didn't go too well. On the bright side I wasn't nearly as muddy as everyone else since I never had to eat the mud spray of riders in front of me. I had the course all to myself.

Just thought I would let everyone know that Tutorial Castle received its first Advertisement Click yesterday which earned $0.12. The site is on its way to making millions.

That is actually pretty good considering the site has not been online very long. Usually it takes about 6 months to get search engine traffic to a site. All my work to get pages indexed is apparently working.

Christmas Tradition

Those of you that want to participate in the christmas donation thing. I have a suggestion. I have created a spread sheet to log all the money. I suggest that each month each family put the $10 into the family account. If you would just lable it for example: george jan., george feb., etc. I will log it on the sheet for you. That way at the end of the year, all the money is in the same place and easy to collect. We will then get together and pick a family to help and how. Money, gifts, gift cards, etc.

For those of you that have gmail accounts I can make the spread sheet a shared document so all can access it. Those of you that dont have a gmail (email) account I might suggest you sign up. Some of the features are very convienent. For example, spreadsheets and other documents can be created and shared with others. All that have access can view and edit these documents. Everyone can see things as they are being edited and see what have been edited by others. Also, these documents can be accessed from any computer that has an internet conection. Word and Excel documents can be imported, etc.

Anyways let me know if you want to do it this way or if you have another idea.

Thanks

George

Great website

Steve found this great website. Apparently it's been around for years but we didn't know about it. It is called fitday. You can log your workouts, or any activity during the day & your meals. Ok, so that's pretty standard, but what makes fitday better is that you can enter your own custom foods. So if you make your own meals, you don't have to enter each ingredient separate. You simply create a "custom food" with all the nutritional information in your meal & it will save it for you. The only trick is that you need to know the nutritional information. However, simply visit this website:
http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp
and enter your recipe & the number of servings and it will calculate the nutritional information. Then, the best part is that fitday will calculate all kinds of charts for you. It shows how many calories you've eaten compared to how many you've burned. It will show the daily value% of the vitamins you've eatten so you know what you need more or less of. It will calculate how many of your calories are coming from fat, protein or carbs. The list goes on and on. Anyway, I think this site is awesome so I thought I would share.

Jeff was looking at past pictures of himself that we have and comparing them to Ethan. Mom has Jeff's baby pictures so the youngest we could find was when Jeff was almost 5. Even though he is older than Ethan is now, they really look alike. I will post the picture on our blog as I don't know how to do it on here and you can check it out and tell us what you think.

Today is the official launch of the website, called "Tutorial Castle", I have been working on. It is a basically an index of tutorials from around the web.

I am still building it as I go but I wanted to get it online so the search engines could start indexing it to drive traffic that direction.

New Steak House

Steve & I wanted Pa to know that we found a new steak house for him to visit the next time he's in Tooele. It is a small restaurant in Stockton (about 5 miles south of Tooele)called Miners Cafe. It is decorated with old pictures and tools. While we were eating a lady brought her kids & grandkids over to our table and asked if they could look at her 2nd grade class picture on the wall. The steak was excellent and the pork chops were good too. No more loud "music" when we dine out.

RSS Section Added To The Site

I have built a new RSS Feed section for the site. It is still new and I will continue to work on it. I put it up so people could enjoy it and have an easy place to keep track of all their RSS Feeds. Feel free to add your favorites to the site so others can enjoy them too.

For those of you unfamiliar with RSS, it stands for Really Simple Syndication. Basically what it does is go to your favorite websites and grab the latest content. Then you can display it all in one spot to make it easy to find the new stuff you want to go look at.
